THE DING DONG FAMILY

A Ding Dong is produced and distributed in the United States. The Ding dong was previously known as Big Wheels, and Ding Dongs has been produced since 1967. It is round with a flat top and bottom, similar in shape and size to a hockey puck. A white creamy filling is injected into the center and a thin coating of chocolate glaze covers the cake. The Ding Dong was originally wrapped in a square of thin aluminum foil, enabling it to be carried in lunches without melting the chocolate glaze. To advertise Ding Dongs, Hostess created the cartoon character King Ding Dong, an anthropomorphized Ding Dong sporting a crown and scepter, that is now iconic to the brand. The Hostess Ding Dong is ranked as number two on Rankers list of the moste popular of the Hostess sweet treats. Ding Dongs have been known by many names in the U.S. and abroad (King Don, Big Wheels), but their sediment-style layers of flavor and texture are revered across-the-board by cake lovers. There’s something particularly indulgent about finding your way through the icing, to the cake, to the creamy center; it’s like being a culinary archeologist! There’s much more to the list of Ding Dongs than the original – we also have Caramel Ding Dongs, Star Spangled Ding Dong, Ding Dongs Ghost White (limited edition!) and Ding Dongs White Fudge!
