TWINKIES

Hostess Twinkies are an American snack created back in 1930 in Illinois by James Alexander Deware. Twinkies can be described as golden sponge cakes, usually filled with vanilla cream but also available with chocolate or fruit fillings. Hostess Twinkies can be eaten deep-fried, as a hot dog and cheese sandwich, or as an ingredient in other dishes—the only limit is your imagination! There’s also a cookbook published in 2015 to celebrate Twinkies’ 85th anniversary, filled with creative and delicious recipes!

Twinkies are a very popular snack in the U.S. and appear in several well-known movies, such as *Ghostbusters*, *The Hollow Man*, and *Zombieland*. Among others, John Fogerty and Tove Lo sing about Twinkies in their songs—Hostess Twinkies, the super-famous little cake—give them a try yourself!

Did you know? Hostess produces 1,000 Twinkies per minute—or about 500 million Twinkies per year—just to give you an idea of how much Americans love their Twinkies.

We all know and love the original Twinkie, but did you know there are many more sweet treats in this family? You can find them all HERE!

THE TWINKIE FAMILY

Twinkies were invented in Schiller Park, Illinois, in 1930 by James Dewar, who ran a bakery at the start of the Great Depression. He wanted to make better use of his expensive strawberry shortcake equipment, which sat idle when strawberries were out of season. So he put banana cream in a shortcake. Dewar sold Twinkies in packs of two for 5 cents. When bananas were rationed during World War II, the simple vanilla cream we know today became the filling. Over the next two decades, Twinkies dominated the packaged cake market. Twinkies were marketed to children through everything from TV commercials to Batman comics and achieved status as a cultural icon. Today, the Twinkies family includes Hostess Chocodile Twinkie, Hostess Chocolate Cake Twinkies, Hostess Chocolate Creme Twinkies, Hostess Chocolate Peanut Butter Twinkies, Hostess Peppermint Twinkies, Hostess Pumpkin Spice Twinkies, Hostess Strawberry & Creme Twinkies, Hostess Twinkies Cotton Candy, Hostess Twinkies Mint Chocolate, Hostess Twinkies Ogre Green Creamy Filling, and many, many more!

HOSTESS HISTORY

Hostess cakes have been enjoyed for generations. These little desserts were first introduced in 1919, though at that time only one muffin variety was available to consumers. The first store opened in Kansas City, Missouri, and sold a very popular bread, but soon began producing a range of sweet pastries as well—and they were a huge hit! Since then, Hostess products have expanded to include a wide variety of delicious treats for all kinds of sweet tooths! Some Hostess snacks are limited editions, and other Hostess cookies are only available during certain holidays, but there’s definitely something for everyone here! During the 1970s and 1980s, Hostess snacks were often featured in full-page comic book ads in major publishers such as DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Harvey Comics, Archie Comics, and Gold Key Comics.
